More about Aluva

Aluva (formerly known as Alwaye) is situated in Ernakulam District in Central Kerala that is the southernmost state in India.

Alwaye is most famous for Shivarathri; the greatest festival of Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva). Celebrated with considerable fervour [Feb-March] on the sandbanks of the famous Periyar River called manalpuram, it's an all-night festival filled with lights and chanting. The unique feature is that the Idol Shivalinga is not enshrined in any Pagoda, but stands on the vast sand banks. On the night of Sivarathri, pilgrims keep awake reciting the puranas and in the early morning perform the Vavubali [offering] in honour of their forefathers. A 10 days fair springs up at the manalpuram catering to thousands of pilgrims who assemble here. During monsoon, these sandbanks get flooded and there is no trace of any shrine.

‘Alwaye Palace?is situated on the banks of the Periyar River with beautiful circular verandahs overlooking the river. This old palace building is now The Alwaye Guest House that is one of the loveliest in the State.

Aluva is known as the industrial capital of Kerala, and boasts as the industrial belts of Kerala with many flourishing industries. It is also known for the oldest municipalities in the state. The population of Aluva is constituted mainly of upper middle class, middle class, and working class. The newly inaugurated Cochin International airport at Nedumbassery is 10 kms drive from Aluva city.

The MarthandaVarma Bridge connects Alwaye North to South but being too narrow for traffic a new bridge [Marthandavarma Bridge II] has been built recently, alongside the old one and used for one-way traffic. A similar project is underway at Mangala Puzha as well.

Union Christian College founded in 1921, is one of the oldest colleges in Alwaye. Several generations of old students of the college now live in all major cities of India as well as in the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, U.K., the European mainland, and in the different countries in the Persian Gulf. Some are in the film industry.

Federal Bank, one of the biggest private Banks in India has its Head Quarters in Alwaye.  Famous movie couple Dilip & Manju Warrier live in Alwaye.
